The Hamilton House
The Hamilton house was built by John Hamilton in 1840, and is the oldest house in Dalton. It has the old Dalton water source in the backyard, along with the Hamilton’s spring house. During the Civil War, both the Confederacy and the Union used it as a hospital. General Joseph H. Lewis used the house as the headquarters for the Kentucky Orphan Brigade, also during the Civil War. The house is said to be haunted by the Native American Chief, Young Bird (A.K.A Red Bird). He was riding his horse along Thornton Avenue, and he fell off and broke his neck. A railroad was later built over his grave, and now it is said that the house is haunted. Today, the house is used as a museum, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 701 Chattanooga Avenue in Dalton, GA.

Westcott House
The log built house known as the Westcott House moved from near the Tennessee line, to Dalton in the 1930’s. Relics found these things in the house: two coin silver spoons, a Barlow knife, a lady’s soapstone pipe, and a “Whig Party Campaign” button. The window and frame had to be taken out in the master bedroom so the queen bed can fit through with the very low ceiling. It is about 210 years old. An unknown builder took apart the house and put it in Dalton. It is two stories high, and has a dog trot. It is unusual for a log cabin to have two stories. The house is made out of wood. In the beginning it was two houses, and Fred and Lamar Westcott bought them both on the Tennessee line. When the unknown builder took it apart and moved it to Dalton, he made it into one house on Greenwood Drive. They kept corn in the cabin to keep it cool all of these years. The Cherokees would use every part of the corn and use the shell to stuff their mattresses that they slept on. They used the cob of the corn to eat and to use as fuel. The corncrib is made of Cherokee logs.
